Panaji: The state witnessed yet another surge of new cases of the COVID-19 pandemic, as 94 more people tested positive for the deadly virus on Friday taking the total number of active cases to 800.
This is the second-highest spike that Goa has recorded. On Thursday, the state reported 95 COVID cases, which has been the biggest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases.
With this surge, the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Goa stand at 1,576 of which 772 people have recovered from the disease; five COVID patients have succumbed to the deadly disease.
Some 38 COVID patients have been declared cured in the last 24 hours by the directorate of health services.
As many as 21 of the 94 new cases are from Balli, 17 cases are linked to Mangor Hill, the containment zone in Vasco, and 12 cases have been detected at Baina.
As per the bulletin issued by the directorate of health services, the new cases also include nine from Sankhali, seven from Ganganagar, Mapusa and six each from Margao and Kharewada.
Five new cases have also been detected in Mangor Hill, three at Ponda and two each from Indiranagar-Chimbel, Valpoi, Headland Sada, New Vaddem, Pernem and Usgao
One isolated case each has been detected at Nuvem, Betki, Agassaim, Caranzalem and Taleigao.
According to the DHS, the 800 active cases include 116 persons, who travelled to Goa from outside by road, rail and air; 245 residents of Mangor Hill, while 238 cases are linked to the containment zone in Vasco.
The other locations of the active cases are: Curtorim (14), Margao (15), Ambelim (24), Quepem (12), Loutolim (8), Indiranagar Chimbel (14), Navelim (2), Ganganagar Mapusa (13), Sankhali (43), Camrabhat (2), Canacona (6), Nachinola (1), Porvorim (3), Vaddem Vasco (1), Kundaim (1), Verna (5), Ponda (8), Valpoi (5), Marcel (3), Usgao (2), Sal Bicholim (5), Borim Shiroda (2), Pernem (2), Sanguem (1), Pirna Mapusa (1), Mardol (1), Goa Velha (1), Taleigao (1), Nuvem (1), Betki (1), Agassaim (1), Caranzalem (1) and Pilar (1).
The major locations from where cases are surfacing include Zuarinagar (84), Kharewada (30), New Vaddem (39), Morlem (22), Baina (66), Chimbel (27), Headland Sada (65), Curtorim (31) and Balli (21).
The health bulletin shows that 10 villages in Goa have reported isolated cases that are currently in the tally of active cases. The 10 villages include Pirna, Mardol, Goa Velha, Taleigao, Nuvem, Betki, Agassiam, Caranzalem, Pilar and one village of Sanguem taluka.
The emergence of isolated cases in the villages is a cause of worry for the public and the health authorities. The isolated cases are the one whose source of the virus is not known, or yet to be ascertained by the health department. Such cases being reported in rural areas is a clear indication that the community transmission of the virus is at its peak in the state, although the government is refusing to admit this fact.
In the majority of cases, the health department has failed to trace the source of the virus, which could be attributed to the stress on the ‘overburdened’ health workers.
Meanwhile, 79 samples drawn from the sealed area of Camrabhat at Taleigao has tested negative for the COVID-19. The area has seen two cases where a father and son tested positive for the virus.
Yet another COVID patient passes away
Margao: A 75-year-old woman COVID patient, who had been receiving treatment in the designated COVID Hospital in Margao, passed away on Friday night. The patient had been receiving treatment in the hospital, COVID district coordinator Dr Ira Almeida confirmed, adding that the patient had also been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The woman’s death takes the number of Goa’s COVID fatalities to five.
The underlying lung and COPD conditions have been a cause of the most of these COVID deaths in the state. NT
