Khaunte speaks out against tourism restart

Stating that the opening of the tourism activities in Goa from July 2 is directly aimed at giving a back-door entry to the functioning of casinos, Independent MLA from Porvorim Rohan Khaunte on Thursday said the offshore casinos will start operating by the end
of July.

He demanded immediate closure of the Goan tourism activities till the end of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“Goans cannot accept the tourism activities in Goa at this point of time,” Khaunte added, questioning the rationale behind commencement of tourism activities in Goa in the month of July itself, when the tourism season starts in the month of September/ October, every year.

“The domestic tourists arriving in Goa from red zones in the rest of the country will speed up transmissions in Goa,” he predicted, maintaining that with the Section 144 coming into force at 10 pm, the tourism activities would not flourish in the state.

Addressing a press conference, the Porvorim legislator said that he has already written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in the Goan COVID-19 situation, and would now call upon Governor Satya Pal Malik.

“In fact, some people in power are misinforming the Centre about COVID-19 situation in Goa,” he alleged.

Khaunte said that there are 34 positive cases in Sankhali, the constituency of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

“The Chief Minister, who has been telling people not to be afraid of COVID-19, has left his Sankhali residence and is staying in Panaji for the past three days,” he claimed.

The Porvorim MLA also said that Minister for Waste Management Michael Lobo is acting as a super prime minister and is suffering from multiple identity disorder, due to which he is playing various roles at a time.

“Sometimes he becomes a collector and issues entry permits to Goa, while at other times he becomes supporter of taxi drivers, and then he also becomes scientist and comes out with new Newton’s Law of Motion,” he quipped.
