A huge banyan tree uprooted and fell on the road claiming a life of an elderly person who was proceeding on a two-wheeler at Rachol.
He was aged 81 and a retired teacher, identified as Rosario Fernandes, a resident of Sonarwaddo -Raia.
Several other trees were also uprooted, blocking the village road.
The banyan tree, uprooted at around 11 am near the Rachol arch.
“The banyan tree came down without any rain or strong winds. I was inside my gadda, talking to a neighbour. Leaves of the collapsing tree drew my attention and I tried to alert the man who was going on scooter but he could not hear me. He got crushed under the huge tree,” stated Antonio Fernandes, the gadda owner. The tree fell inches away from the gadda.
“We identified the man and immediately informed the family. He suffered severe injuries to his head and hands. The victim breathed his last on the way to GMC hospital from Hospicio,” Antonio said. The busy road remained blocked for few hours.
Rachol sarpanch Fatima Cardoz rushed to the site along with panchas. Local MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco also visited and provided equipment and manpower to help clear the tree faster.
Deputy sarpanch Querobino Gomes and panch Luis Oliveira were at the site assisting the people in clearing the tree branches.
Similarly, at Raia-Solva a huge tree uprooted and fell on the road, blocking the movement of people. It was however cleared by the locals.
Meanwhile, police sub inspector Mahesh Naik said that a case of unnatural death has been registered in connection with the death of Rosario Fernandes.
