Mapusa civic body collects house tax worth Rs 10 lakh though POS system

The new system of door-to-door collection of house taxes using POS device by Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has collected around Rs 10 lakh in about 20 days.

On April 29 the Mapusa Municipal Council in collaboration with AXIS bank launched a new system using smart POS (point of sale) application system which will enable the council to provide door-to-door service for collection of house tax in municipal jurisdiction. The initiative was taken up following the direction of the director of municipal administration, and MMC was the first council in the state to implement this system.

Since April 29 till date the council has collected around Rs 10 lakh. On an average the MMC collects around Rs 50,000 using two POS devices. Two municipal staff is entrusted with the collection task and has been going door-to- door to collect the house tax.  The council in the first week had concentrated on residential complexes.

The chief officer of MMC Clen Madeira said, “The response from general public is good as the council has succeeded to collect around Rs 10 lakh till date in the form of house tax using the POS system. We will also be procuring another two devices”.

One of the major hurdles the council is encountering while collecting the tax is internet network problem due to which the process gets delayed.

“We have been facing problems like senior citizen at homes have got their debit cards, however are not aware about their PIN number so they call their family members due to which delays are reported, besides network is also another issue which we have already raised with bank officials and trying to work out a solution” informed the account-cum-administration officer Bhanudas Naik.
