Dashing the hopes of the Shigmotsav enthusiasts, authorities have stuck to the order that festivities of Ponda Shigmotsav scheduled on Tuesday March 10 will be curtailed by 10 pm sharp owing to the model code of conduct in the state. This decision was taken during the joint meeting of the Ponda Shigmotsav committee, deputy Collector, Ponda police inspector and traffic inspector on Monday at Ponda.
“Though organisers had sought the extension of the Shigmotsav timing in Ponda, the government has not conveyed anything to the organising committee or the law enforcement agency. Considering it, we have decided to curtail the Shigmo festivities by 10 pm,” deputy collector Ponda Kedar Naik told this daily.
The organising committee has assured law enforcement agency that the Shigmotsav festivities will start by 3 pm sharp and considering it, any float or shigmo artiste will not be allowed to enter the Ponda town after 7.30 pm to avoid delay, informed police officials from Ponda. Special police force gate will be put in place at Dhavali to block the late entry, official added.
Ponda Shigmotsav parade scheduled on will start from Tisk Ponda at around 3 pm and culminate at old bus stand, Ponda. As the state-level Shigmo festivities begin from Ponda, thousands of revellers and shigmo artistes are expected to take part.
Total prize money of the all the categories participating in the Shigmotsav will be around Rs 6.90 lakh. It should be noted that last year due to code of conduct in place for the parliamentary election, Shigmotsav parade of Ponda was stopped half way at around 10 pm and participants were not allowed to present their performances.
Due to which dissatisfaction was expressed by the enthusiasts and this year many groups are urging the government to remove the time restriction.
