Panaji: The State Election Commission (SEC) has written to the tourism department to ensure that the floats participating in the annual four-day Carnival parade should not depict ‘achievements or promises’ made by the BJP-led state government.
It is pertinent to note that the ZP polls will be held on party lines, the model code of conduct for the March 22 Zilla Panchayat elections came into force in the state including in the municipal areas with the announcement of the poll schedule by the Commission on Friday.
The model code of conduct will end on March 23 midnight, whereas the Carnival is scheduled to be held from February 22 to February 25.
The Commission has given its nod to organise the Carnival festival. However, the tourism department has been asked to see to it that no political functionary should inaugurate or close the function or deliver speech all throughout the event.
“It shall be ensured that these are not the floats that which publicise the achievements/promises made by the party in power or which have the potential to garner votes in favour of any particular candidate/party,” reads the letter written by SEC secretary Melvyn Vaz to the tourism department.
