The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), during the upcoming budget session of the state legislative Assembly, will hold a protest march against the state government for its failure to protect the waters of Mhadei river.

The budget session of the House will be held from February 3 to February 7, with presentation of the budget by the Minister for Finance Pramod Sawant scheduled on February 6.

Addressing a press conference in the city on Wednesday, the MGP president Deepak Dhavalikar said that the central committee of his party has decided to step up the agitation with a demand to prevent the diversion of water from the Mhadei river by Karnataka.

Accusing the government of failing to protect the state’s interest as regards Mhadei river, the MGP president said that his party has already started an agitation linked to creation of awareness on the issue, and would now be holding a protest march on the
Assembly complex during the upcoming budget session. “We are yet to decide on the exact date to hold this march,” he added.

Speaking further, Dhavalikar said that there is no clarity on the stand adopted by the state government on issues like Mhadei waters, mining, and law and order situation in Goa.

The MGP also alleged that the BJP was trying to hijack the upcoming Zilla Panchayat elections by maintaining a veil of secrecy as regards the reservations of different constituencies. “The government is yet to provide the State Election Commission with details of the reserved constituencies,” he pointed out, adding, “We fear that the reservations would be announced at the last moment thus depriving level-playing field to other political parties.”

The MGP has already announced that it would be contesting the Zilla Panchayat election.
