With an aim to provide a platform for young minds to share ideas and address the conflicts of an urban age, International Centre Goa (ICG) in association with Goa University are organising the fourth edition of Ideas Unleashed: ICG – Goa University Essay Competition 2020. The topic for the competition is ‘The Challenges of Urbanisation in Goa’.
The essay topic chosen is of immediate relevance to Goa, to its residents, and all who visit Goa. There are visible and less visible changes taking place across the state in the built environment, whether it is public infrastructure or housing; population flows/migration and growth; and growth and expansion of cities and suburbs. These changes will and are having both positive and negative consequences. Keeping that in mind, college students from across the state are invited to read, examine, and write on what they understand to be the main challenges of urbanisation and how these can be negotiated and addressed. Students may choose to focus on one or more of the challenges that Goa’s urbanisation has thrown up or deepened and how those are being addressed by the state/government, common people, civil society organisations and others. They may choose to write on whether and how specific social groups, as for example students themselves, business groups, migrants, or farmers, understand these challenges and their likely consequences for the lives of ordinary people.
“The whole idea behind this competition was to get fresh ideas from young minds and to gauge their response to various topics related to Goa. The essay competition will give students an opportunity to ponder over such issues, unleash their unique ideas and find solutions,” says programme assistant –
media and public relations, ICG, Galileo Fernandes. “In the first edition we received about fifty entries. But since then, in the second and third editions, we have received above hundred entries. The competition is growing and the response is increasing,” he adds.
Like the previous edition, the competition will be in both English and Konkani language categories and is open to students currently enrolled with Goa University and colleges affiliated to Goa University, Goa Institute of Management, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Goa, the National Institute of Technology, Goa, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Goa. The competition is open to students up to the age of 25 years. The last date for submission of essays is March 14. The top three ranked essays will receive cash prizes as follows: in the English category, winner of the first place will be awarded a cash prize of `25000; winner of the second place will be awarded a cash prize of `20000; and winner of the third place will be awarded a cash prize of `15000. In the Konkani category, a cash prize of `25000 will be awarded to the best entry.
