Dempo SC fight back to leave Salgaocar FC bootless

Nagoa, Verna

A brace by Arnold Oliveira and a goal by captain Shreyash Naik enabled Dempo SC register a well deserved 3-1 win against a spirited Salgaocar FC in the AIFF Junior League match played at Panchayat ground, Nagoa in Verna on Saturday.

Down by a goal in the 23rd minute, Dempo SC made a marvelous come back and pumped in three goals which included two by Arnold Oliveira who bulged the nets in the 38th and 88th minute of play and Shreyash Naik found  the mark in the 55th minute.

Salgaocar FC took the lead following a counter attack when medio Jordan smartly crossed the ball to Sidney Gauncar whose good effort gave no chance at all to Dempo SC keeper Myrick Hilario who had a good day under the bar.

Dempo S C should have taken the lead in the very 10th minute of play when Sairon Albuquerque had a great chance with an open goal in front of him in the six yard box, but the defender – who had done a great job in overlapping – aimed his shot at the sky, missing a golden opportunity to give his team the lead.

The match then began to be played on a hot pace with both the teams vying for supremacy and it was the Salgaocar FC team that stunned a fine tuned Dempo SC team with a goal in the 23rd minute, in their favour.

A Salgaocar FC medio dodged two Dempo defenders on the right flank and then passed the ball to ideally place Sidney who had no difficulty in sending the ball to the far corner of the rival nets.

Dempo SC then made several forays but a goal eluded the team due to some stout defending – where Salgaocar FC defender Nevil Menezes stood firm quite prominently.

Dempo almost levelled the score when Rohit Shirodkar worked  his way down the flank and passed the ball to Arnold who in turn passed the ball to captain Shreyash  whose shot missed the mark narrowly.

It was in the 38th minute of play when Dempo restored parity following a stiff grounder from Arnold Olivera off a cross from Shreyash Naik.

Minutes before the breather , Salgaocar’s Jordan was seen sending the ball wide off the mark from close distance.

Though the first half was controlled by Salgaocar FC, the second session saw Dempo SC in full cry, always eager to find the mark.

Dempo SC made the score 2-1 in their favour in the 55th minute of play when Shreyash bulged the nets off a good pass from Arnold Oliveira .

Pressing hard, Dempo SC scored another goal to make it  3-1 in their favour when Arnold Oliveira slammed the ball in off a neat pass from Shreyash in the 88th minute to complete his brace for the day.

Though there was not much of a free flow play, with good passes missing from both the sides, the match was closely fought.

While Dempo SC were good in shooting abilities, Salgaocar FC clearly lacked shooting prowess. In the last 15 minutes of play, Salgacoar FC looked to be a tamed team with Dempo SC pressing hard and showing their dominance

With this win, Dempo SC have collected six points in only two outings while Salgaocar FC have accumulated 15 points in seven matches.
