Now, smart meters for major power consumers in state


Panaji: Taking a step further, after ‘successfully’ covering the most parts of Goa with digital meters, the state electricity department is going to introduce smart power meters for the major power consumers in the state.

“Smart meters help reduce energy consumption. It will be linked to a mobile application which will enable consumers to access the live metering data on their mobile phone. The consumers will be able to analyse and come to know which electric appliances are being overused. And, as per the requirement, the usage can be controlled thereby reducing the power consumption,” said the newly appointed chief electrical engineer Raghuvir Keni while speaking to this daily.

Keni said that the smart meters are quite expensive, however, they are very reliable and consumer-friendly, and added that using the particular application, the consumers can also analyse the efficiency of their electrical appliances.

“The central government has come out with a policy on smart meters, and the same will soon be introduced in Goa, first, we will cover industries and later the last mile, we will try to cover domestic consumers in a phased manner. It may take some time but we will definitely do it,” he said.

He said that the department will try to seek funds from the central government under the different schemes and introduce the smart meters at the earliest.  

Spelling out his vision for the department, the new CEE said that he intends to complete all ongoing projects on priority, and upgrade the power distribution system for better voltage regulations and capacity addition, considering future


He said that his focus will also be to reduce the technical and commercial losses, and added that he will give thrust on solar power generation.

Stressing on the need to introduce digital solutions for convenience of consumers, Keni said that different services of the electricity department will be made available online.

“At present, services like online payments of electricity bills are offered on the official website of the department.  We want to add more to the web-based services and we will work on it and ensure that it materialises at the earliest,” he said.

When questioned as to how the department plans to tackle the power outages across the state, especially, in the coastal belt, the CEE said that the department is assessing the power situation in the state, and added that “we will remove the bottlenecks in power distribution. We will try to remove them in a phased manner as we can’t resolve all the problems at one go. We will fix the priorities and complete the works.”
