Chimbel residents want swift completion of flyover

Panaji: Stating that Thursday’s fatal accident involving eight vehicles is the ninth accident that has occurred at the Chimbel junction, residents of Chimbel opined that the only solution to the problem at the junction is completion of the flyover.

Speaking to this daily, the Chimbel residents said that the earlier accidents that occurred at the junction, however, were not fatal.

They said that on two previous occasions, two light motor vehicles had gone off the road and fallen into a nearby nallah. Recently, in another accident that occurred at the junction, a cement truck skidded off the road and fell on its side, said the residents.

A security guard who witnessed the Thursday’s accident said that he and a traffic police who were near the accident site ran for their lives after seeing a tanker tilt towards the right of the road from the left side.

A resident said that a traffic police should be posted at the junction to regulate flow of vehicles during peak hours. “Sometimes there is nobody to man the traffic. Besides, during night time, cattle occupy the road near the junction on many occasions and with the visibility becoming poor at night, the risk of accidents at the spot increases,” he said.

Another resident said that completion of the flyover from the Chimbel church to the Merces circle is the only solution to stop accidents from occurring in the area. “If work on the flyover had not stopped some years back due to litigation, we would have not seen this day,” he said referring to Thursday’s accident. The residents felt that the government should expedite work on the flyover and complete it as soon as possible.
