Cuncolim: The Cuncolim Municipality recently held an inspection of a steel factory – Sharda Ispat, after locals and ward councillor demanded revocation of permission granted by the civic body.
The locals who threatened a morcha, said that the factory had been the cause of dust pollution in their area.
During the inspection that was attended by councillors as well as the municipal engineer, witnesses say they saw a large heap of slag saying permission to extend operations should not have been granted.
Factory manager Abhishek Gupta while speaking to media persons said that they had the required permissions from the municipality as well as the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to carry out their operations.
Ward councillor for the Cuncolim Industrial Estate ward Sucorina Coutinho however said she was not taken into consideration when giving the permission. “Today we noticed an entire mountain of slag at the factory and now they want to extend their operations. As ward councillor, I was not even aware this was going on and the municipality should have taken me into consideration before giving the permission. People from my ward are questioning me when I myself was not aware,” she said
The councillor added that the industry was having severe effects on people living nearby. “People living in the surrounding houses near this place have been complaining to me about the amount of dust pollution entering their homes and causing them trouble. Liquid from the slag that is dumped ends up entering our water bodies and wells making them contaminated. This is unacceptable,” said Coutinho.
Veroda ward councillor Shashank Desai whose ward also has to face the brunt of the pollution said locals have threatened to take a morcha against the municipality.
