Goa to host eight State BCCI U-19 women’s tourney from today





Ladies in Goa are in for a treat of women cricket as Goa Cricket Association (GCA) is for the first time hosting the Elite group C of the BCCI U-19 fifty over cricket tournament between eight states in Goa.

“The winners and runners- up of the Elite Group C will qualify for the final round,” stated Veena Phadte, chairperson of the organizing committee during a press conference to release the Goa squad for the tournament.

Tejeswini Duragad who was captain of South zone last season has been named captain of the Goa team and Shindiya Naik is her deputy. The Goa team was seen practicing at the GCA Avcademy ground in Porvorim on Saturday under the watchful eyes of coach Anuradha and former Ranji player Robin D’souza.

Goa plays their first match on February 11 against Tripura at the GCA academy ground Porvorim. Goa plays two of its other matches at the GCA Academy ground in Porvorim whilst the remaining will be at the GCA ground in Sanguem and the MCC ground in Margao.

The Goa team is: Tejeshwini Duragad, Shindiya Naik, Purvaja Verlekar,Diksha Amonkar, Divya Naik, Tanaya Naik, Poorva Bhaidkar, Diksha Gaude, Sejal Satardekar, Rehna Kamat,Gayatri Talwar, Ibtisam Shaikh,Savali Kolambkar,Urvashi Govekar and Taniya Pawar.

Hosts Goa are grouped with Tamil Nadu, Vidharbha, Gujarat, Odisha, Tripura,  Saurashtra and Jammu and Kashmir.The tournament begins on February 10 and concludes on February 26 and will be held simultaneously at the GCA Academy ground in Porvorim, The GCA ground in Sanguem and the Margao Cricket club (MCC) ground in Margao from 9.30 am.

GCA executive committee member Manohar Naik has been appointed in charge of the Sanguem venue, Sayed Abdul Majid is in charge of Margao , Mohan Chodankar is in charge of Porvorim and Yatin Kamurlikar has been appointed the tournament co-ordinator by GCA.

“The tournament will go a long way in encouraging girls in Goa to come and play cricket in more numbers. I know the tournament is clashing with exams but I call on all girls, who can make it, to come and support Goa and watch the girls from other teams,” stated Veena Phadte during the press
