Calangute locals clean ‘Mottan’ spring

Villagers of Calangute, under the banner of Calangute constituency forum, cleaned the Mottan spring which has been turned into a garbage dump with visitors particularly picnickers throwing waste in it.

Calangute constituency forum president Premanand Divkar said that the issue has been raised with the village panchayat of Calangute a number of times and has also been discussed in the village development committee wherein it was decided to restore it to its original state.

Divkar said that some villagers have cleaned the spring which was littered with plastic, beer bottles and other waste. He said that over two bags of garbage were collected from the area.

Located in the cashew-covered foothills of Calangute, the spring is famous for its medicinal water. It is also a popular picnic spot.

Cyril D’Souza, a villager said that many centuries ago a Buddhist monastery existed near the spring and the ancient archeological site needs to be preserved and developed into a tourist spot.  Jose Braganza said that the site needs to be preserved and the water from the spring must be put to use.
