Killer crane truck snuffs out lives of woman, 5-yr-old son at Mapusa





In a tragic road accident, a woman from Saligao and her five-year old son lost their lives instantly on Thursday after being run over at Mapusa by a crane truck, which dashed against the two-wheeler on which they were travelling. The woman’s father-in-law, who was riding the two-wheeler, sustained injuries and has been hospitalised.

The Mapusa police said the accident took place at around 3.45 pm after the two-wheeler (GA03AK 7920) ridden by Bhanudas Pednekar entered the city via the Gandhi circle and was travelling towards   Hutatma Chowk. A crane truck (GA03 R 1098) was travelling behind the scooter.  The truck driven by Abdul Subar dashed against the scooter from behind at Hotel Braganza opposite the entrance of the KTC bus stand. The scooterist  lost control over the vehicle after being hit from behind and fell on the side of the footpath, while the woman Seema Pednekar (37) and her son   Siddharth Pednekar (5) fell on the road. They   were run over by the truck, which dragged them to a few metres.

The crane truck driver tried to flee from the scene.  However, the locals who had gathered there after the accident, stopped   him and handed over the man to the police.

The woman and her son died on the spot.  The woman’s father-in-law sustained injuries in the accident, and has been admitted to the North Goa District Hospital at Peddem, the police said.

The Mapusa police conducted panchanama and arrested the truck driver under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code.

The police are  further investigating the case.
