High-level meet today on escort service websites

Goa Governor Mridula Sinha has convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday to hammer out an action plan against escort service websites, which lure college girls and offer them for flesh trade.

The meeting has been called following a written representation by a women’s volunteers group in the state against escort service websites.

Earlier last month, the Goa Women’s Forum had written to the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of Goa University, as well as Vice-Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni alleging that escort service websites offer college girls and housewives for flesh trade. The website operators   use religious places to show call girls.

Acting upon the representation, Sinha has convened the meeting on Wednesday at Raj Bhavan.

The meeting will be attended by the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police, the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar of Goa University, the information technology secretary, the director of women and child development and Arun Pandey of Anyay Rahit Zindagi amongst others.

Welcoming the decision, the GWF has said that it is confident that an effective action plan will emerge as an outcome of the meeting.

“The GWF had also appealed to the Governor as Chancellor of Goa University to take a bold decision and make the Goa government do all that is required in law to shut down these escort service websites which are openly promoting sex tourism in Goa by portraying Goa University and college girl students as call girls,” GWF convener Lorna Fernandes said.
