Affected shack operators should be given full compensation: Shantaram

Ex-MP and president of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) Shantaram Naik said that shack owners, who have suffered losses due to cyclonic rains in Goa, should be paid 100 per cent compensation and licences of insurance companies that have refused to sell insurance policies to shack owners, must be cancelled.

Naik was speaking during his visit at Arambol to make assessment of damages suffered by shack owners. He said he has learnt from shack owners that no panchananama was done by talathis specifying individual losses.

Naik said that natural disasters like floods, tsunamis , earthquakes and manmade disasters like terrorist attacks can happen in the state any time, and Goa government, specially, disaster management authorities should be ready to face any eventuality.

He said it was unfortunate that Goa meteorology department predicted that Goa would not be hit by Ochi cyclone and although it did not affect Goa coast directly, the damage suffered by shack owners has been quite substantial.

Naik was accompanied by party principal general secretary, Altinho Gomes, North Goa district committee president, Vijay Bhike and other Congress workers.
