As the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is round the corner, the festival is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm in the state. People gather at large and get home idols of Lord Ganesha and worship it. Earlier and even today despite the ban on idols made out of Plaster of Paris (POP), many Ganesh idols made of (POP) continue to be sold. These pose a threat to the environment but in recent times people have realised the importance of making eco-friendly Ganesh idols in order to protect the environment from harm.
A workshop is being organised on making eco- friendly Ganesh idols. In order to educate and teach people how to make eco-friendly idols, artiste and founder of Ranjana Agarwal’ says: “The workshop is being conducted in order to teach people to make idols from clay. Clay does not harm the environment and therefore, people should use it. At the same time these workshops are a medium to get people in the festive mood.” She adds that we need to care of our waters as there are a lot of aquatic animals surviving in it.
Plaster of Paris (POP) do not easily get dissolved in water thus killing fishes, damaging the plants and even blocking the natural flow of water and causing stagnation, therefore, eco-friendly Ganesh idols are mostly preferred by people.
She also mentions that the workshop is organised in association with ‘Go womenia’ a group that works towards women empowerment and under which such a workshop is a medium to give women a platform to explore themselves.

(The workshop will be held on August 13 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Patto, Panaji. Fees: `500. Details: 9552518650)
