Smack in the middle of the monsoons, Goa plays host to an unusual event—an all brass concert. It is being held for the third consecutive year, the 3ABC (Third All Brass Concert) is being presented by the Garden Central Music Studio, a collective of music teachers under the direction of Rui Lobo.
This year, the event is being held on July 10 at the Menezes Braganza Hall, at 7:15 p.m. Although Goa has played host to a few brass band concerts, it is usually foreign artists who have played, however this one is uniquely based on local talent.
“The Garden Centre Music Studio (GCMS) at Panaji has endeavoured to promote the study of brass instruments among adults and children for the last four years to revive the dying art of brass instrument playing in Goa. We’ve moved away from Marches and Polkas usually associated with brass bands to more orchestral works. Scarcely heard nowadays are the compositions of Andrew Lloyd Webber from his Rock Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. The challenge of these pieces is, the rarely used metres of five-beats and seven-beats, which will be performed at this concert,” says Lobo in the press note.
The guest of honour for the event is ex-Mumbai Police Band conductor, ex-conductor of Goa State String Orchestra and mentor to whole lot of brass musicians in Goa, Jerome Rodrigues. The guest of honour will be doing a guest performance on trumpet accompanied by the Ultra Brass Sound (UBS) ensemble at this concert.
The concert is being supported by teacher, Tony Coutinho from Salcete and his brass students. Over 30 musicians will take part, including well known artist Nolvert Cotta, grandson of band master Santana Cotta. Drummer, Lester Godinho will be providing support on percussion.
