Goa Engineering College ready to welcome IIT



The Goa College of Engineering (GCE) has completed all preparations for providing a campus to the IIT-Goa (Indian Institute of Technology-Goa), in its premises on the Farmagudi Plateau, including provision of classrooms and laboratories.
Coming out with this information, the GCE principal Dr Vinayak Shet said that IIT-Bombay has been entrusted with the three-year task of mentoring IIT-Goa, which will start functioning at the GCE premises from July 15, 2016.
“We are in constant touch with the IIT-Bombay and have provided all the facilities for IIT-Goa as per the requisition of IIT-Bombay, including classrooms, a laboratory and a small part of the GEC hostel, which would be renovated and shared by the students of GEC and IIT-Goa,” he informed, pointing out that only 10 per cent girls are expected to seek admission for the total 90 seats, for first year, at the IIT-Goa.
IIT-Goa will conduct classes in three streams namely mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer engineering; each stream having a strength of 30 students.
Speaking further, Dr Shet said that the team of IIT-Bombay would arrive in Goa by July 1. The recent declaration of the IIT JEE (Advance) had paved way for the process of preparation of the merit lists for various IITs around the country.
The GCE principal also informed that Sharad Bharatiya has been appointed by the IIT-Bombay as the Dean for Academic and Administrative Matters for IIT-Goa. He also mentioned that the campus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), which was set up in the premises of the Goa College of Engineering for some time, has now moved out and is functioning from an independent building near the GCE premises.
The state government has already identified around 5 lakh sq mts of communidade land in Canacona taluka, for setting up the permanent campus of IIT-Goa.
