On the need for sustainable urban development

Ecovision Nature Club of GVMs GGPR College of Commerce and Economics organised a two-day state level seminar on sustainable urban development in association with Directorate of sports and youth affairs. The seminar was inaugurated by municipal councillor and garbage cell incharge, Venktesh Naik. Guest of honour at the seminar was, principal, Bachelor of Education College, Allen Abreu. Also present at the inaugural function were vice principal M M Chikodikar, NSS coordinator Pradeep Maske and Sulaxna Vernekar.

Associate professor, Gulab Borkar explained the theme of the seminar while in his address, Naik spoke on sustainable plans for waste management in Ponda. The first technical session was on – sustainable water management and resource persons were Dattaram Desai and Sachin Tendulkar. The second technical session was on sustainable waste management. A panel discussion that was held had Rekha Joshi speaking on the role of nirmal vishwas. Anita Kavalekar spoke on household waste management and Raghunandan spoke on the role played by POP as well as social responsibility. Technical engineer, garbage management cell, Ponda Muncipality, Rajesh Phadte spoke on the municipality’s role. A session on urban farming was held at the third technical session.

Abhay Kesarkar was speaker and dealt with how urban farming can mitigate the effect of global warming. Ashoke Dande who was present at the session spoke on gardening techniques. At the fourth technical session the practical aspect of waste management and techniques of gardening were explained to students. Resource persons for the same were Rekha Joshi and Gulab Borkar. The seminars had 125 students along with 10 teachers from different institutions.
