Faculty enrichment programme at St Xavier’s College

The IQAC, of St Xavier’s College, Mapusa recently organized the 29th faculty enrichment programme on the theme ‘Functioning of an Autonomous College’. The resource person for the programme was, advisor, SP Chowgule College, Margao, Ramesh Vishwanath Gaonkar,.

Principal, Fr Walter de Sa in his address highlighted that the Faculty Enrichment Programme on the theme ‘functioning of an autonomous college’ was yet another step taken by the Institution on to the path to autonomy, he further stated that  the purpose of attaining autonomy is academic freedom which leads to quality education.

The resource person Ramesh Gaonkar, remarked that he is offering his help to St Xavier’s College in the path to gaining autonomy as the Institution is capable of the same.  Focusing on the essence of autonomy, Gaonkar, said that autonomy is the academic freedom given to colleges to achieve excellence in higher education. The academic freedom involves the freedom to delete obsolete courses and replace them with innovative courses, and the freedom to have own methods of teaching, learning and evaluation.

Addressing the need for autonomy, Gaonkar explained that the affiliating system of colleges was originally designed when their number in a university was small. The university could then effectively oversee the working of the colleges, act as an examining body and award degrees on their behalf. The system has now become unwieldy and it is becoming increasingly difficult for a university to attend to the varied needs of individual colleges.

Gaonkar also spoke on the various steps taken by Chowgule College on its path to attaining autonomy. Gaonkar laid down four pre requisites to gain autonomy, i.e. faculty preparation, departmental preparation, institutional preparation and the preparation of students and local community.

On the occasion various publications like Spectrum; a research Journal, Proceedings of the National seminar of physics department, a manual of Algae for Anjuna Coast written by Maria Fonseca and newsletter of the department of biotechnology was released at the hands of Gaonkar.
