Surendra set to take over CCP reigns

PANAJI: With the deadline for filing nomination papers ending, former mayor Surendra Furtado and Lata Parekh have been virtually elected unopposed to the posts of Mayor and deputy mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) respectively since nobody else has filed nomination papers, revealed CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues, who was busy making arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony for Mayor, deputy mayor and councillors.

Earlier in the day, CCP deputy commissioner Sudhir Kerkar informed that on Monday morning at around 10.30 am, he received four nomination papers – two each from Furtado and Parekh. He said the swearing-in ceremony will be held at 10.30 am on Tuesday.

It may be recalled that in the March 6 election to CCP, Atanasio alias Babush Monserrate panel ‘Panaji city Corporation Development Front’ had won 17 seats while BJP backed panel ‘Panaji First’ had bagged 13 seats.
