A major fire broke out in a godown at Karapur-Tisk on Wednesday night, causing a loss to the tune of Rs 1 crore. Fire personnel from Margao, Bicholim and Valpoi stations were summoned to extinguish the blaze and it took them nearly 14 hours to bring it under control.
Ten fire tenders were pressed into service and 60 firemen carried out the blaze-dousing operation.
As per information, garbage collected from 130 village panchayat areas was stored in the godown and that it was around 330 tonne. Apart from the garbage, baling machines, weighing scales were also gutted.
However, the firemen managed to save two adjacent godowns of civil supplies department where rice and wheat, to be distributed to fair price shops, have been stored.
The fire personnel under the supervision of station officers Rajendra Haldankar-Margao, Shailesh Gawade-Ponda, Atchut Dhawaskar-Bicholim and Namdev Gawas-Valpoi carried out the fire-fighting operation.
