PANAJI/VASCO: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has called for a status report from the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) in the case related to illegal structures at Khariwada, Vasco. The case will come up for hearing before the High Court after two weeks.
The Board of Trustees of the Port of Mormugao had moved the Court over the illegal structures at Khariwada, Vasco.
Advocate S D Padiyar appeared on behalf of the MMC.
The MPT had protested against the reconstruction of some of the demolished structures at Khariwada, Vasco, where 66 structures were demolished some years ago, and had urged the state government to stop the reconstruction of the structures there.
The local fishermen had protested, and had launched an agitation against demolition, resulting in huge losses to the MPT and iron ore exporters, and that had compelled the state government to intervene to stop the demolition operation.
The fishermen under the banner of Khariwada Affected People had disrupted the Mormugao port activities carried out through the sea route, as a part of their protest against the demolition.
Meanwhile, the Court has also called for status report on the illegal structures at Baina.
Meanwhile, Chief officer of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Deepali Naik, said, “The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the Mormugao municipal authorities to conduct a survey and identify the structures which are located along Khariwada coast within the next 15 days’ time and submit a status report of the structures for the purpose of demolition.”
Naik said that the MMC authorities have not received copy of the order.
It may be also recalled that the MPT had identified land at Adarshnagar-Chicalim some years ago for the rehabilitation of the Khariwada fishermen, however, they had refused to take possession of the land, fearing that their fishing business would come to an end.
The fishermen are demanding land close to the Vasco bay.
Meanwhile, the aggrieved Khariwada fishermen have urged the government to save their structures.
