Activists question work near south Collectorate

MARGAO: Activists in Margao have written to Margao Municipal Council (MMC) asking it to verify the legal aspect of the work being carried out outside the South Goa Collectorate along the roadside space, which is apparently being done for landscaping. “We have written to the   chief officer of MMC asking whether such development is permitted,” said one of the complainants Savio Dias.

On Tuesday, the roadside space, usually kept for widening purpose, was cleaned up using a JCB and workers were seen levelling it with mud.  “We are told that the area has been cleared for construction of a garden,” a worker said.

Sources said the government has given consent to develop the roadside space for beautification purpose.  However, when the district collector Sachin Shinde was contacted for his comment, he said that “the proposal was moved to the government in 2014 and it received the nod.” He said that he did not receive any copy of the complaint.
