Shillong Lajong stun Dempo

MARGAO: Brilliant strikes in the second half  by Boithang Haokip and Cornel Glen helped Shillong Lajong FC to upset Dempo SC 2-0 in their 6th round match of the I-League played at Nehru stadium, Fatorda, on Saturday.

Though the first half was almost evenly balanced, the visitors from Shillong dominated the second session and emerged deserving winners after Dempo put up an insipid show both in the defence and the attack. Dempo midfield too did not live up to their known standards and the wishy-washy performance cost the team dearly.

On the other hand, Shillong Lajong made meticulous moves and could have been up by three goals had the three good chances that came their way were converted with Dempo keeper Laxmikant Katimani being at their mercy. After Dempo midfielder Lenny Rodrigues’ shot was saved by Lajong keeper Rehenesh TP in the very second minute of play, the visitors retaliated and had a clear chance to score in the 10th minute but the experienced Nigerian attacking medio Penn Orji, who was fed well on to the top of the box by Cornel Glen, shot the ball into the hands of Katimmani, who managed to send the ball for an abortive flag kick.

Lajong then had three glorious chances to score in the 23rd, 25th and 28th minutes. First, it was Cornel Glen who failed to score off a pass from Penn Orji and then Seiminlen Doungel was too slow to connect the ball home off a nice pass from the right. Doungel then fed Cornel Glen on a platter but the latter failed to beat Kattimani, sending the ball wide from close. After surviving these anxious moments, Dempo produced some counter moves which proved ineffective.

In the second session, Lajong played a great game. They went into the lead in the 55th minute through a freekick which Boithang Haokip curled into the top of the right corner, giving no chance to the Dempo keeper. Thereafter, Cornel Glen redeemed himself as he dodged three Dempo defenders to score a beautiful goal to put his team two goals up in the

69th minute.
