PANAJI: Governor of Gujarat Om Prakash Kohli was sworn-in by Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Mohit Shah as the eighteenth Governor of Goa on Thursday, at a short but well-attended ceremony, at the Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan.
Kohli, 78, has been given additional charge as the Governor of Goa by President Pranab Mukherjee after the term of Margaret Alva, who also held additional charge as Goa Governor ended recently.
Earlier, Chief Secretary B Vijayan read out the warrant of Kohli’s appointment as the Governor of Goa by President Pranab Mukherjee.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Speaker Rajendra Arlekar and leader of the opposition Pratapsingh Rane, besides a number of state ministers, MLAs and bureaucrats attended the event. The new Governor was given the Guard of Honour after the ceremony.
Later, speaking during the tea ceremony, the Governor said that he is very happy to arrive in Goa, a region blessed with lovely nature and lovelier people, who have maintained communal harmony so well. “I have also heard about the development of Goa, which has been put on right track by your Chief Minister,” Kohli added, pointing out that all those handling the administration of Goa are so
mature that he sees no need to give them any advice or guidance.
Replying to a question, the Governor said that whenever the Goa government will seek his time, he would be more than happy to provide it. “I will be always there for assisting the government of Goa, whenever it needs me, even though I am also Governor of Gujarat,” he mentioned.
Answering another question, the Governor said that he has already visited Goa in the past, albeit in other capacities. “I was here earlier as president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) as also Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary,” he replied.
Kohli also remarked that his appointment as the Governor of Gujarat, the native state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a great responsibility. “But then Gujarat is not only the native state of the Prime Minister, but also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, two legends in their own right,” he added, stating that Gujarat also has a long and illustrious tradition of Vaishnav sect, which boasts of saintly figures like Narsi Bhagat.
