SRI method of farming demonstrated to Sangolda school students


SANGOLDA: The Green Growth Institute, Sangolda in collaboration with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa, on Monday, held a demonstration on paddy cultivation through the SRI system for the Std VIII students of Chubby Cheeks Spring Valley High School Porvorim.
A live demonstration was presented to the students on how to plant the sapling using the SRI method of farming by Piedade D’Souza from Morrod, Sangolda and Sandra Fernandes of Green Growth Institute, Sangolda in a field at Morrod, Sangolda.
Speaking to this reporter, Pushpa Ankalgi, class teacher of Std VIII of Chubby Check stated that last year, around 37students had also participated in a similar venture.
Scully D’Souza, a student, while encouraging the other students said that children are future farmers and have urged the students to maintain discipline and learn from the experts to keep the traditional occupation alive.
Sandra Fernandes, who runs the Green Growth Institute, Sangolda was a professor at the Assumption Commercial College in Bangkok for the last 20 years. However, after her return to the state around four years back, she started the institute after getting inputs for the Mapusa Zonal office.
“Under the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), one can yield 7 tonnes of rice per hectares as compared to the traditional method which yields only three and a half hectares,” she stated.
H R Prabhudesai of ICAR stated that the SRI method of farming is currently being implemented 67 farmers from 5 villages including Sangolda, Guirim, Parra, Saligao and Verla covering around 11.6 hectares of land in collaboration with Green Growth Institute, Sangolda.
