Jumber for Joy

Oh jumpers, who would have thought that your appeal would linger for so long? And not just the ultra-casual, brightly printed rompers and playsuits that populate music festivals and trendy farmers' markets, but decidedly grown-up, sophisticated options too.

Nearly all of the designers included one in their collection, from YSL’s sleek black halter neck version in silk crepe to Paul and Joe’s floral cotton design to Escada, featured jumpsuits in their collections during this Spring/Summer 2012 Fashion Week. From prints to colours, jumpsuits with halters and wide leg pants hit the runway. The disco staple of the 70s is becoming a very hot commodity in modern fashion. In fact these costume-y pieces have really reinvented themselves into something sleek and very stylish, as ladies like Liv Tyler, Rihanna, Heidi Klum, Zoe Saldana of the movie ‘Avatar’ and more closer to home Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu all know how to rock in a jumpsuit.
Jumpers have been huge this season a one-piece garment consisting of a blouse or shirt with attached slacks or shorts. Hardly a week goes by that one of the Kardashian sisters or your favourite celebrity doesn't wear one. If you decide to purchase a jumper, you should first be sure that you are referring to the loose fitting garment that is similar to a dress and kept re-inventing itself from time to time. Some cultures refer to baggy sweaters as jumpers as well. Call it a Romper or a play suit, this beautiful garment quickly grew in popularity because they can be dressed up or down and are very fashionable. Today, they have become one of the few long lasting fashion trends that can be seen everywhere from runways to red carpets to after parties. Jumpers are timeless and very comfortable, which is why so many ladies have at least a few in their wardrobe. The longer variety is the most popular, but there they are also available as a short dress, shorts, skorts and pants. Thanks to sleek feminine silhouettes and luxurious fabrics jumpers are now an incredible chic and stylish choice for both day and evening events. It’s no secret the 70s are back in a big way and the jumpsuit is the quintessential way to work the trend.
How to rock in your jumpsuit:
Don’t Overdo: Although the jumpsuit is throwback to the 70s, do not make the mistake of dressing in head to toe 'disco gear'. In other words, do not wear a pair of clunky, platform shoes and an afro with your jumpsuit! Stick with 2012 trends when you are accessorising, such as a pair of spiky high heel pumps, a large bangle cuff, and a statement belt. Strappy open toed heels also look great with your jumpers.
Petite Body Type: If you’re more petite like Kourtney Kardashian, opt for something with a higher waistline to enhance your legs. Your curves are your assets, know how to flatter your curves in a one piece. Look for belted designs that will emphasise your waist and check the drape of the fabric as you want to avoid any unflattering ruching around the thighs.
You can never go wrong with classic black or white. Take a cue from Deepika Padukone. Of course black is always a good choice - its slimming and sophisticated. Sexy black comes in a variety of cuts from flowing pants to curvaceous cut-outs. What is so special about this look is the versatility to fit any body type, age group, or personality.
If you're a jumpsuit virgin, layering it underneath a jacket makes the look more subtle. Pick tones that are similar, for instance if you are wearing a floral print team it with pastel blazer.
A printed jumpsuit has the versatility to look just as great on the runway as it does off. Do not go overboard with your printed jumpsuit as it already speaks a lot. Wear yours with a waist belt to keep the print from being overwhelming. Or pick a jumpsuit in a single, bright colour.
Don’t Dorn A Tuxedo: There are so many reasons to avoid a pinstripe jumpsuit—not wanting to look like an extra from a Marching band!
Mix And Match: Ladies jumpers are a perfect piece for mixing and matching your wardrobe. Jumpers can be worn with everything from sneakers and sandals to stilettos or boots. They are versatile and easily accessorised with jewellery, belts or scarves. There are so many ways to wear this look dressed up or dressed down with a pair of wedges and it’s ideal for the day and if you’re going out at night.
Embellishment: This one piece garment has reinvented itself into chic evening wear too. Next time you are all set to hit the town, don’t adorn your classic LBD, think different and opt for an embellished piece or a satin piece.
Cinch Waist: The neat thing about jumpsuits is that they come in so many different styles. You have the full length '70s style' pantsuits, the short 'romper' style, jumpsuits with capri length legs, etc. No matter what style or length you decide to wear, always make sure to belt it with a cinch belt. This will prevent you from looking like a sewage plant worker.
Hair Style: For your hair, if you really want to give your jumpsuit an edge, wear it up in a ponytail. This is the 'do’ favoured by the celebs and looks totally cute and fun. Add a pair of large hoop or drop earrings and a clutch style purse and you are good to go!
If You’re A Man: Just don't!
As the saying goes, there are no ugly girls, only the lazy ones. Thanks to the jumpsuits, it’s no longer that true. Even if you are too lazy to match your outfits, a fitted jumpsuit will suit you well! Fashion is fun, and with jumpers, the possibilities are endless! Most importantly, walk out your door with confidence in your stylish jumpsuit, as you are a fashionista!
