Wilred shoot out Paroda

MARGAO: Wilred Leisure SC, Curtorim had to wait till the tie-breaker to overcome a spirited ICSC, Paroda 8-7 and enter the quarterfinals of St Anthony’s UK Cup football tournament, organised by St Anthony’s SC, Colva and played at DSYA grounds, near Colva beach on Thursday.

The teams were level 1-1 in the regulation time, during which spell both the teams fought a grueling battle for supremacy. Both the teams had a few chances but could not finish the match in the normal time.

It was the Paroda side that stunned the formidable Curtorim side in the 23rd minute of the first half when their striker Poly Oliveira got past rival defence and shot past the otherwise confident looking goalkeeper Johnson Bhagat.

Crossing over, Wilred Leisure entered the field with renewed ideas and with meticulous moves tore apart the Paroda defence. On one such moment, Joel Fernandes making full use of the opportunity that came his way scored a gem of a goal as he beat Paroda keeper Rasol Fernandes to bring his team on level terms.

As the teams were involved in a deadlock, tie-breaker system was adopted wherein Wilred Leisure SC proved to be better shooters, scoring accurately through Wilson Fernandes, Johnson Bhagat, Dester Fernandes, Agnelo Martins, Seby Martins, Nelson Pais and Joel Fernandes.

ICSC, Paroda could find the mark only through Soccoro Colaco, Anthony Dias, Manish Oliveira, Melvito Fernandes, Denzil Vaz and Hygiris Fernandes.
