Fifteen-year-old Welcina Fernandes of St Xavier’s HS, Velim is a promising defender who has potential to be a good player in the future.
Her true talent was noticeable during the match against Our Lady of Rosary HS, Navelim where she played a crucial role in restricting the marauding rival strikers from finding the mark. Had it not been for her tough defending, the Velim school — who lost by a whopping 5-0 margin — would have conceded at least three more goals.
When the strikers of Rosary HS came charging in, it was Welcina who came from nowhere to clear the ball to safety. Welcina also made some attacking moves by doing a lot of overlapping, but she did not get enough support from her mates to get past the strong rival defence.
“My two sisters who are also playing football inspired me and here I am trying my best to be a good footballer,” said Welcina. She intends to work hard and represent Goa one day.
“I want to be a professional football player,” Welcina disclosed, adding, “I am in std Xth now and want to study well and also wants to be a football player.”
