Three members of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) board of the VM Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar – Balkrishna Vishwanath Thali, John James Samuel and Amrit Dutta participated in the 2018 INADR International Mediation Tournament and World Congress won the Judges Appreciation Award.
They had to battle three tough negotiation sessions against teams from USA, Canada and Singapore. Though they missed getting into the top 16, they impressed the judges on other scoring criteria.
Balkrishna said that he couldn’t have asked for a better team to represent and the State of Goa in America at a global level. “It was not only about winning this special award, but competing with the top universities of the world and proving ourselves thereby making our presence felt. We were determined to get some award back home,” he said.
Amrit said: “It was all about moulding your ideologies and strategies depending on the opposition’s approach.” While John said that there were so many aspects to be taken into consideration: “The cultural differences of our opponents, their accents, their approach and body language and also understanding the linguistic background of the mediator and the experts judging the session.”
He added: “It was a proud feeling to be acknowledged among 149 other teams from different universities across 40 countries. It was an excellent opportunity to network with experts in the field. It will also help us with our primary goal of promoting ADR in India.”
The team was coached by professor B S Patil. He said: “I was a little worried initially as this team was participating in an International event for the first time.” But he is proud of the boys and the way they performed.
