Violinist Sanya Cotta passes away at 32

Panaji: Well-known Goan violinist Sanya Myla Cotta passed away in Belgium on April 20 following a brief illness. She was 32.

The Bangalore City Chamber Orchestra (BCCO), for whom Sanya was the concert master, has announced her demise on its social media platform and offered condolences to her family, friends and students all around the world.

“She will be dearly missed,” the BCCO states, adding, “May her soul rest in peace.”

Sanya, who began her studies at the age of three at the Conservatory of Hamburg, on her return to Goa continued the studies under Myra Shroff, obtaining an associate diploma (ATCL, Trinity College of Music, London), a Licentiate from the Royal School and a fellowship of the Trinity College of Music. She then completed two Masters’ degrees.

A highly-talented violinist, Sanya had blazed the trail across Europe. She had performed at various concerts world over, including in India.

Sanya also made an appearance in the 2005 Hindi film, ‘My Brother… Nikhil’, shot in Goa.

‘The Navhind Times Viva Goa’ Goan Achievers’ Award was presented to Sanya Cotta in the field of Music, art and culture, in 2011.
