Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida has decided to lodge a police complaint against the fishermen attached to the Old Cross Fishing Canoe Owners Co-op Society Ltd, based at Khariwada, for their alleged involvement in the violation of the ban on fishing.
Speaking to media in Vasco on Friday, Almeida alleged that the fishermen attached to the OCFCOCSL are involved in illegal fishing.
“I have learnt through some footage from news channels that the fishermen
associated with OCFCOCSL have unloaded fish from motorised canoes,” he said.
He further said that the ban is imposed by the government to facilitate fish breeding.
Meanwhile, reacting to the statement of Almeida, OCFCOCSL president
Custodio D’Souza along with other traditional canoe owners from Khariwada have welcomed the statement of Vasco MLA and have urged him to file a
police complaint against the illegal activities which are on rise in the premises of Mormugao Port involving the coal handling operations.
D’Souza said that there is a severe unemployment crisis and hence the locals have ventured into the fishing business.
