Vijai demands rehabilitation for occupants of Baina hutments

VASCO: Disputing the grounds under which 205 hutments along Baina coast are to be demolished on April 16, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai on Tuesday came out in support of the occupants and demanded a rehabilitation package for them.

Earlier, Sardessai listened to the grievances of the occupants on whom eviction notices have been served and who have been asked to leave by the South Goa district administration. Sardessai along with All Goa Congress Committee Minority Department chairman Saifullah Khan also met Karnataka MLA A S Patil, who is camping at Baina seashore for some days in support of the occupants.

Sardessai said, “Former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had assured Karnataka Minister for Higher Education and Tourism R V Deshpande during his visit to Baina beach about rehabilitating occupants of remaining hutments following the demolition of 76 hutments in July 2014.  Goa government should honour his word by rehabilitating the occupants or give a special package on humanitarian ground.”

Sardessai said that the grounds under which notices have been served to the occupants of Baina hutments are flimsy. As per the notices issued under sections 4 and 6 of Goa Land (Prohibition on Construction) Act, 1995, the area is unsafe and disaster-prone as it is exposed to sea water and prone to soil erosion.

Sardessai said that even though he is an opposition legislator, he believes and supports development but not at the cost of people who have settled in Goa and are part and parcel of Goan culture and lifestyle.

Sardessai also spoke to Power Minister Milind Naik over phone and demanded a proper rehabilitation package for occupants of Baina hutments that are facing the axe. Former Revenue Minister and ex-Vasco MLA Jose Philip D’Souza also visited Baina beach on Tuesday morning and gave a patient hearing to the grievances of said occupants and demanded a proper rehabilitation on humanitarian grounds for the occupants.

The 124th birth anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar was also observed by garlanding his portrait in an open space at Baina beach in the presence of Sardessai, D’Souza, Khan, Patil and a large number of people.
