The victim girl in the alleged rape case involving former education minister Atanasio Monserrate alias Babush is reported missing from the vocational training institute (convent) where she was kept for rehabilitation at Verna.
In this connection, the Verna police have registered a case of abduction under Section 365 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) on May 10 after she went missing from the vocational training institute of a reputed college based at Verna from
The police had earlier on April 29 registered a case of missing, following a complaint from the management of the institution. The Verna police said that Supreme Court guidelines have been followed while registering the case of abduction.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vasco, Sunita Sawant, “Efforts are on to trace the girl. The girl, who has turned 18 years of age, was kept for rehabilitation at the reputed college based at Verna. She left the institution on April 28. She wanted to go to Vasco but as the bus stopped at Zuarinagar, she got down. She did not have money.”
It is understood that police have tried their best to trace her, but she has not been found till date.
“We have continued all sorts of investigations to trace the girl,” said Sawant adding that investigation has revealed that the girl stepped out of the institution carrying her clothes with her.
“Time and again, the girl wanted to go to a particular institution (not at the place where she was presently lodged). Earlier, she had gone out on three occasions, but returned to the institution, but this time she failed to come back to the rehabilitation centre/hostel,” said Sawant.
The police suspect that the girl might have been lured by some unknown persons, forcing her to leave the rehabilitation centre.
“The girl was a victim of crime against women, which was reported earlier and that matter is before court,” said Sawant.
Further investigation into the case is being conducted by Verna police inspector Sandesh Chodankar.
