MAPUSA: The gram sabha of Verla Canca panchayat on Sunday sought a tenant verification drive in the panchayat jurisdiction and a resolution in this regard was passed.
Issues of illegal landfilling, garbage problem, potholed roads, besides tenants residing in rented rooms, were raised during the gram sabha. It was presided over by sarpanch Milton Marques in the presence of panchayat secretary B Karapurkar.
Villagers raised the issue of rampant activity of illegal landfilling of agricultural fields and demanded the panchayat to take action against it and also sought action against illegal constructions in the panchayat jurisdiction.
Sarpanch Marques informed that every issue of landfilling is reported by talathi to the mamlatdar and other competent officials, however, since the encroachers approach higher authorities and get a stay, the panchayat cannot do much.
Following demand of villagers, it was resolved to ask the talathi to submit a report before the gram sabha over illegal landfilling cases reported by him and action taken on them.
The villagers also raised the issue of tenant verification and sought to know the number of rooms given on rent in the village. They asked the panchayat to conduct a drive to find out how many tenants were residing in rented rooms and whether these accommodations were following sanitation and hygiene norms.
The sarpanch said that “the panchayat will conduct a tenant verification drive wherein each panch member along with the panchayat staff will go around to do a crosscheck and, accordingly, a report will be submitted to the police.”
The villagers appreciated efforts towards garbage collection by the panchayat; however, they said that despite the drive, garbage was still being dumped along roadsides and this needed to be curbed. The sarpanch assured to look into it.
