Velsao down defending champs FC Goa to clinch first win

Panaji: Velsao Sports and Cultural Club stunned FC Goa 1-0 to record their first win in the Goa Football Association(GFA) Professional League at Duler Stadium, on Sunday.

This is Velsao’s first win and first three points.

Jesloy Moniz scored the lone goal for the winners in the 48th minute.

In the 10th minute, Velsao’s Kashinath Rathod came close to scoring but even though he connected Inacio’s corner kick, the keeper saved it.

In the 15th minute, Velsao’s Roanal Gaunkar came with a great save when he blocked Aaron D’Silva’s effort which he headed after connecting Hayden Fernandes’s corner.

Hayden played deep for FC Goa to give added support to their back line and push long balls upfront. In the final quarter of the first half, FC Goa were gaining momentum as they used their flanks to find breakthroughs.

Velsao SCC took the lead barely two minutes after the start of the second half when substitute Jesloy Moniz, who replaced Ronaldo Coelho, scored off an unexpected counter attack. Leander’s shot at Velsao’s goal rebounded off a Velsao player and reached Jesloy who was left unmarked. The lad ran down from the centre and scored past Antonio Da Silva, 1-0.

The sudden goal saw FC Goa press for an equaliser and the Velsao men fall back to thwart FC Goa’s attempts.

In the 64th Minute, Kingslee nearly found the equaliser when he was fed by Nestor Dias in front of the goal, but the former’s shot was pushed for a corner by Velsao keeper Roanal.

Velsao had a chance to consolidate their lead when Antonio’s poor clearance fell into Remedious Vaz’s path but the lad couldn’t threaten the keeper as his left foot shot was easily collected by the FC Goa keeper.

At the other end, FC Goa came close to scoring when Sweden Fernandes played a dangerous ball in the box, but keeper Roanal punched the ball to safety before FC Goa’s Aaren could connect his head.

Later, Velsao’s Kashinath tried his luck from distance but his effort went straight to the keeper.
