‘Vayu’ passes Goa coast without major damage

Panaji: The cyclonic storm Vayu passed the Goa coast on Tuesday evening at a close distance of 200 kilometres without causing much of havoc in the state.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued ‘orange alert’ for Wednesday indicating heavy to very heavy rain (between 11.5 cm and 20 cm) at isolated places in the state, as the deep depression over the Arabian Sea, which brewed over the last two days, has now intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is likely to hit the Gujarat coast on June 13 morning.

On Tuesday, the sky was partly cloudy in the state during the morning hours and later turned generally cloudy in the afternoon till late evening with light to moderate rain occurring at widespread areas accompanied by squall.      

In the last 24 hours, Sanguem recorded the highest rainfall of 17.2 mm followed by Dabolim 11.2 mm, Canacona 10.2 mm, Mormugao 9.6 mm, Quepem 7.4 mm, Panaji 6.4 mm and the least rainfall of 1.6 mm was recorded in Sankhali.
