Vasco Saptah fair stalls along Swatantra Path removed

VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), on Sunday, saw to it that the Swatantra Path and other inter-connected roads were cleared of all the stalls that were put up for the Vasco Saptah fair.

The municipal authorities also seized material displayed at the stalls for the failure on part of the vendors to stop their business in time.

It was learnt that the deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate, Mormugao, Mahadev Araundekar in a reply to a request made by the MMC chairperson, to allow the vendors at the Saptah fair to operate for two more days, had directed the municipal authorities to remove all the stalls by seven days, as per the directions issued by the High Court in a writ petition no 21 of 2013.

“This office cannot request the Collector, South Goa for closure of road or for extension of stalls beyond the period of seven days. Since there is a direction from the High Court not to install stalls on the public footpath beyond seven days. You may approach the High Court for extension, as requested in your letter, dated on August 23, 2018 or remove all the stalls immediately failing which you will be solely responsible for contempt of the court,” the deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate Mormugao Araundekar had stated in his reply.

Taking immediate cognisance of the directions issued by the deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate Mormugao, the MMC authorities on Sunday removed all the stalls and even seized the material for the failure on the part of vendors to dismantle their stalls.

Meanwhile, furniture stalls operating from near Bank of Baroda’s Vasco branch to IOC junction along Swatantra Path will continue for few more days as per the annual tradition.
