Vasco Sports Club stunned I-League campaigners Churchill Brothers Sports Club  4-1 and moved from the bottom to the seventh spot in the Goa football Association (GFA) Professional League  played at Duler Stadium here on Thursday.

At the breather Vasco were leading 2-1. Though Manas Sarkar drew the first blood for the Red Machine, the Port Towners came back strongly to score through Nigerian striker John Nnanna and Minesh Kunkolkar.

On resumption of play Schubert Pereira and Franky Oliveiro added their names to the score sheet to earn full points to the Port Towners.

Vasco coach Eban Mesquetta made two changes in the starting eleven- Deryl Endro and Franky Oliveiro coming in. While Churchill Brothers head coach Mykola Shevchenko  named the same squad  except for Manas Sarkar .

In the 8th minute Churchill missed being awarded a penalty after their defender had clearly handled the ball inside the penalty box, but referee Jose Rebello surprised the Port Towners by overlooking the incident.

Minutes later Vasco skipper Schubert saw his blistering shot miss the target narrowly

It was Churchill who surged ahead, against the run of play, in the 28th minute when Alber Gonsalves’ set up Manas Sarkar in the box. The latter’s strike hit the inside of the crossbar before entering the goal, 1-0.

Stung by the reversal, the Port Towners leveled in the 35th minute as Nigerian striker Nnanna powerful shot from the top of the box hit the far post before entering the goal, 1-1.

It did not take long for Vasco to further consolidate their lead as two minutes later Minesh’s long-ranger deflected off Churchill defender Rahul Kumar’s head and entered the goal, 2-1.

On crossing ends, in the 55th minute, Anil had the best chance to further increase their lead but Minesh shot wide from close.

A few minutes later, Churchill’s Valerio, Manas and Joshuah Vaz combined well in a move where they almost beat every opponent but Joshuah saw his shot rebound off the crossbar.

While the Red Machine failed to score, Vasco inflated their lead when their skipper Schubert dribbled past the defender and shot at the top corner of the goal, 3-1.

Schubert had another chance to score in the very next minutes as Anil once again made a curling cross in the box, but Schubert shot over the crossbar.

At the hour mark, Franky shot past keeper Jayanth to make it 4-1

Churchill tried to get back in the match but Vasco defender led by Treyson D’Costa along with Minesh, Leny Fernandes and Myran Pereira held their fort till the final hooter.
