Varca Sporting Club lift Cana-Benaulim trophy

BENAULIM: Second half goals from attacking medio Jhonus D’Costa and Nesh Pereira enabled Varca Sports Club to register a 2-0 win against St Anthony’s SC, Colva and emerge champions of Cana-Benaulim Panchayat Cup Football Tournament organised by St Sebastian Union Club in the final played at St John the Baptist grounds, Benaulim on Sunday.

Varca shot into the lead in the in the 4th minute of the second session following a flag kick which Joylon Cardozo brilliantly floated exactly where Johnus D’Costa stood who had no difficulty in sending an angular header to beat the St Anthony’s keeper Jamiro Fernandes.

The second goal Varca team scored came off in the last two minutes of play following a goal-mouth melee where in Nesh Cardozo who was in an ideal position made the most out of the skirmish to bulge the nets.

Varca were superior in both the sessions of play and though the turf was almost flooded with the showers in the first session of play, the team did dish out some good soccer which warmed the cockles of the hearts of the spectators.

Jesus Cardozo, Macson Fernandes and Flanslon Correa could have done much better for the Colva team in the defence and even though Baptist Fernandes, Cliff Dias and Pawaskar tried to find the mark in the last few minutes of play, Varca keeper Mohammed Shaikh was in no mood to budge an inch as he brought off some smart saves.

Columbun Noronha, Nesh Pereira, Daniel Fernandes, Mathew Mascarenhas and Francis Fernandes gave a good account of themselves as they gelled well with each other in the defence and the midfield interchanging their positions well enough.

The finals were witnessed by a large number of spectators.
