“Planting indigenous species and taking care of their growth will help Goa to get rid of increasing carbon emission,” said environmentalist, Rajendra Kerkar. He was speaking at the Van Mahotsav programme organised by Nature and Environment Club of S S Dempo College of Commerce and Economics in collaboration with its NSS unit.
Chief guest for the occasion, Kerkar also said that we should plant not only fruit bearing trees but also medicinal herbs. “Trees not only offer cool shade and release oxygen but also help recharge ground water. Trees like matti re, the state tree of Goa and taman, the state tree of Maharashtra help maintain the ecology and environment. Trees like vad, peepal and rumad have been given importance religiously as they are instrumental in enriching the environment of the area,” he added.
After addressing those present Kerkar also planted a taman sapling.
Assistant professor, Nitin Sawant expressed his passion for planting trees and stressed on the importance of preserving nature by planting trees. He also sensitised students about their responsibilities towards the environment and society.
Principal, staff and NSS volunteers along with other students planted various species of saplings on the campus and undertook to take care of the same.
