CANACONA: In a bid to curb incidents of crime, Canacona could see CCTV cameras and high mast lamps installed at its major junctions.
Tourism Department has already completed a survey on it. And, the police has appealed to the business community too to install cameras, facing the roads, outside their establishments.
Canacona police inspector Rajendra Prabhudessai, on Saturday, said that the CCTV footage was the primary clue which helped track down the accused in the recent rape case.
“Repeated pleas have resulted in several business establishments bringing their premises under CCTV camera surveillance. We will appeal to the business community also to install cameras facing the roads which will help record any suspicious activity,” he added.
Replying to a question over tourism department’s proposal to install the cameras at major junctions, he said that the survey has already been done, but the dependence on these cameras has been reduced owing to many people installing their own cameras.
He further said that the Canacona police will write to the South Goa Superintendent of Police to recognise those residents whose CCTV cameras helped in the investigations, and this will also encourage more people to come forward to install CCTV cameras.
