The Anchor who acts on the Konkani stage – Francisco Fernandes

In the year 2005, St Anthony’s High School, Majorda participated in the state-level skit competition; in which Francisco Fernandes from Utorda participated and with his acting skills bagged the Best Actor award. It is then when Francisco realised his potential and capabilities for acting and thought of seriously exploring the field. Today, you can see Francisco creating waves on the Konkani stage.

Born in Sangolda, to Adriao and Marina Fernandes, he currently resides at Utorda. After completing his schooling at St Anthony’s High School, he pursued his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in Information and Technology (Software Engineering) from RIT College, Shiroda.

From a very young age, he was interested in extracurricular activities. Besides winning the award for Best Actor in the skit; Francisco also won the Best Scout in the state of Goa for the year 2007. It was an award given by the Bharat Scouts and Guides, Goa.  He also won gold and silver medal for state-level Hockey between the years 2008 to 2010. In 2009, he represented Goa in Hockey at the national level.

Besides, actively participating in sports and winning several accolades and prizes, Francisco seemed to be more inclined towards acting.

He got his first acting offer on Konkani stage for the tiatr ‘Nanv’. He was approached by Jose Fernandes, to be one of the lead actors in the tiatr. The tiatr was staged at Kala Academy, at the tiatr competition. His performances continued in many other tiatrs directed by Michael Gracias and Sandeep Kalangutkar. Meanwhile, Francisco made his debut on the commercial stage in ‘Faleam Ravonaka’ a ‘tiatr’ by Menino Mario. Offers then continued from Ives Tavares, Irineu Gonsalves, comedian Joana and others. This monsoon, he plays the lead in ‘Forever Yours’ by Milagres de Chandor. He is regular with the Menezes Theatre and has been acting for Mario Menezes for the last three seasons. Beginning with ‘To Porot Ietolo’ he was last seen in ‘Don Roste’, where he played the role of the son who was torn between his mother’s love and the temptation to amass wealth through wrong means.  He will now be seen in the new tiatr of Mario Menezes, for the winter season. He has also recorded his voice for an audio CD titled ‘Istor Mogachi’ by Reggy which will be released in September.

Francisco has played a major role in the 2015 version of the Konkani film ‘Nirmonn’, where he acted as the son of a young widower.

He talks about the difference in acting, in films and on the stage. He says that facial expressions are very important in films as it contains plenty of close-ups. But overall it was a good learning experience for Francisco as he not only enjoyed but learned a lot.

Francisco has anchored and compered shows, a good dancer and a master of ceremonies (MC) for weddings and other parties.  Besides these, he is a business partner with an events management firm called ‘Tri-Factors Event Management’.

Francisco feels that the audience for tiatr is decreasing. Tiatrists need to give people good entertainment, if this situation has to be reversed. The younger generation should also be convinced that tiatr, is a good form of entertainment, by presenting something that the younger people would enjoy. Francisco shows keen interest in politics and is thankful to his parents for their support and above all, grateful to God for this wonderful gift.
