It is said that youth is the future of our society, and supporting this idea the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) will host the XVII State Youth Festival 2018. The objective of the festival is to empower and encourage youth to put their best foot forward and showcase their innate talents. After successfully hosting 16 editions, the Directorate will start accepting applications to the 17th edition shortly. The first place winners of each of the 12 competitions held in four zones in Goa will be selected to represent the state at a national level in January 2019.

The four zones of youth festival include –Pernem (Pernem, Tiswadi and Bardez), Sanquelim (Sattari, Bicholim and Dharbandora), Curchorem (Quepem, Sanguem and Canacona) and Mormugao (Salcete, Ponda and Mormugao). “The four zones are selected based on the convenience of all participants and facilities available in that area,” says assistant physical education officer, DSYA, Umesh Dicholkar. Dicholkar states that last year they received about 600 applications from Pernem, 350 from Sanquelim, 500 from Curchorem and 750 from Mormugao. “This year we are planning to change our zone two from Sanquelim to Sattari so that the youth of Sattari can take benefit of this platform,” says Dicholkar.

Interested participants can register for any one competition from folk dance, folk song, one act play, Hindustani classical vocal, Hindustani harmonium, tabla, guitar, flute, sitar, Bharatanatyam, Kathak and elocution. “A participant has to be between the age group of 15 to 29 years to be eligible to participate in the events,” says Dicholkar adding that a circular will be sent out to cultural clubs/organisations and educational institutions to encourage a better participation.
