The painting ‘Creation’ initiated by Karishma Alvares was unveiled at The Big Foot Art Gallery, Loutolim on June 21 by homemakers and entrepreneur Edociana Fernandes, Vatsala Bandodkar and Noorjahan Sayed. The unique concept entails an interactive painting, where 3,042 women have left 13,275 fingerprints on the canvas.
“The painting is an expression to strengthen feminism. The painting starts from the right where one can see a lady. She is mythological goddess Parvati giving life to clay, as per the mythological tale, it is linked to the way Lord Ganesha was born. In my painting, that life further follows into a legacy of consciousness and then I have painted a copper pot in the centre,” says Karishma
She adds: “This copper pot is linked to the movement of dancers in Kalshi Fugdi dance of Goa. In Kalshi Fugdi dance, while dancing dancers blow into the pot, where copper pot is symbolic of a womb and the act of blowing into it symbolises giving it life. That further moves into a tree of life that I have painted in the extreme left of my canvas. Other elements like the flower represent a woman’s docile nature. I’ve also added a drawing of an apple that is associated with Eve.”
Karishma says that she has also kept in mind to represent elements of nature in her painting. “There is water, Sun represents fire, tree is symbolic of earth, sky and air,” she says. Besides, the painting fosters the communal harmony by adding mythological tales from two different faiths. She says: “That’s the reason the ladies who inaugurated the painting on March 19, by lending the impressions of their fingerprints were from different faiths – Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. Also the ladies who unveiled the final painting are again from the three different faiths.”
with the desire to host an exhibition for and about women, Karishma had decided to begin the endeavour close to Women’s Day in March. The chosen women were three senior teachers – Rajani Gupte, Marialena Sequeira and Zaibunissa Mulla – who left their mark on the painting leading the way for the other women to follow.
After its inauguration Karishma as well as her family communicated their concept to tourists and only women were asked to leave their finger impressions on the painting. “I had kept no target of any particular number of fingerprints by a specific number of women. But I wanted fingerprints on every corner of my art and only by women. The idea behind this was to acknowledge a woman for her significant role as a creator and curator of life in society.”
Giving it a tag of interactive painting, Karishma says: “Leaving their finger impression certainly made them a part of my art. My father (Maendra Alvares) and my family helped me finalise this concept of finger impressions.”
It took about two weeks to paint the work, while it took about three months to collect 13,275 fingerprints of 3,042 women. “We began collecting on March 19 and it continued till June 19.”
Karishma says that women were enthusiastic to leave their finger impressions. She adds: “It was quite a challenge to control them as they would get excited and enthusiastic to print their fingers on the painting. There had to be someone to guide them at all times. Moreover, we had to keep track of the number of fingerprints as well as the number of women who contributed to the completion of the work.”
