Tense moments were witnessed at Nirankal-Bethoda on Tuesday after workers of steel furniture unit set waste on fire outside the premises with villagers taking exception. Peeved over burning of alleged chemical waste in the open, villagers gathered in large numbers and confronted the workers which led to ruckus.
As per information, the incident occurred at around 9 pm near the Gananath high school when workers set fire to waste comprising of paint and other materials in a large pit near the premises due to which smoke fumes with burning smell spread across the surrounding area.
Villagers gathered in large numbers and questioned the workers following which heated arguments ensued between the two groups and police had to intervene. Fire brigade also rushed to the spot to douse the fire while police detained some workers.
Some villagers also gathered in Ponda police station demanding strict action against the factory workers and its owner. Locals alleged that factory workers had set chemical waste on fire. Inquiry was underway till late Tuesday night.
