Tension erupted at the proposed new bus stand site in Mapusa, after a taxi driver was assaulted by a group of tourists late Sunday evening.
According to sources, Saiesh Govekar, a Verla resident, who drives a taxi, wanted to move out his taxi parked at the proposed new bus stand site, and as a Maharashtra-registered car was blocking the way, he asked the driver to take his car aside and make way for his taxi. At this juncture, some of the occupants of the car got down and started abusing and assaulting the taxi driver, said the sources adding soon some locals rushed to the rescue of the taxi driver and assaulted the tourists.
Subsequently, the tourists tried to flee, and the car driver drove the vehicle away and women occupants of it boarded nearby bus, informed the sources and added that the sister of the taxi driver, who was present at the bus stand, was also assaulted by the women car occupants.
The locals later stopped the bus and gheraoed it as the tourists refused to get down. The Mapusa police were informed about the incident and who rushed to control the situation. The police are looking into the matter and till late night no offences were registered.
